About
I'm Michiel Vlaemynck, a Belgian product and furniture designer. My path into design began in the workshop. A background in woodworking, followed by studies in product and furniture design, gave me a strong understanding of materials, production and craftsmanship. That combination of making and analytical thinking continues to shape the way I design today.
Rather than beginning with a style, I begin with curiosity. Every project starts with a question, an observation or a behaviour worth exploring. Through research, prototyping and refinement, those questions gradually evolve into objects that are intuitive, honest and built to last.
Creating is what motivates me most. I enjoy developing my own ideas independently, while collaboration allows me to challenge my perspective and continue learning. Whether working alone or with others, I value the process just as much as the final object.
Choosing materials
I naturally gravitate towards solid wood and steel because they are materials I understand through years of making. Their behaviour informs my decisions rather than limiting them. At the same time, every project asks for its own material language. Whether that means PET felt, textiles or plastics, the choice should always support the concept instead of defining it.

During my studies I became increasingly aware of the impact production has on design and environment. Manufacturing isn't something that happens after the design is finished, it actively shapes the object from the very beginning. Especially in industrial production, considerations such as circularity, assembly and material efficiency have become essential parts of my design process.
