Ontto.

A study in proportion, restraint and material harmony.

How little is needed to create a chair that feels complete?

How little is needed to create a chair that feels complete?

Ontto began as an exploration of coherence rather than innovation.

Instead of searching for a striking gesture, I became interested in how a chair could emerge from the careful balance of many small decisions. The relationship between tube diameters, radii, edge details, material thicknesses and proportions became the true design process.

Rather than allowing one element to dominate, every decision was made in relation to the next, creating an object where no single detail asks for attention, yet every detail contributes to the whole.

Development

Throughout the project, the chair was continuously refined through proportion.

The steel frame was reduced to its ideal geometry, using gentle bends and consistent radii to create a calm visual rhythm. The oak seat introduces warmth and tactility, while its softened edges echo the curves of the frame.

Small adjustments in diameter, thickness, corner radii and transitions proved just as important as the overall silhouette. The character of the chair emerged not from individual features, but from the relationship between them.

Final objct

Ontto is a dining chair defined by simplicity and precision.

A powder-coated tubular steel frame supports a solid oak seat, combining two familiar materials into a restrained composition. Every element serves both a structural and visual purpose, creating a chair that feels light, balanced and quietly present within its surroundings.

Rather than demanding attention, Ontto is designed to integrate naturally into different interiors while maintaining its own identity.

A dining chair designed through the careful balance of proportion, material and detail. Powder-coated tubular steel and solid oak are combined into a restrained object where every dimension, radius and transition contributes to one coherent whole.
